| Visa type | Typical purpose | Stay / route | Residence-permit step | Work permission | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Z | Employment | Employment route | Work-type residence, where required | Only with the required work authorisation | Employer-led; the visa alone is not enough. |

| S2 | Family visits / private affairs | 180 days or less | Not the usual residence route | Not ordinary employment | Relationship and private-affairs evidence depend on the case. |
| Q1 | Family of a Chinese citizen / permanent resident | More than 180 days | Usually family-reunion residence | Not ordinary employment | Also covers qualifying foster-care cases; check the exact requirements. |
| Q2 | Visits to Chinese / permanent-resident relatives | 180 days or less | Not the usual residence route | Not ordinary employment | For visits, not a guarantee of long-term residence. |
| X1 | Long-term study | More than 180 days | Study-type residence | Limited, approved work-study / internships | Off-campus activity needs school approval and a permit annotation; not ordinary employment. |
| X2 | Short-term study | 180 days or less | Not the usual residence route | No employment authorisation | Follow the approved course and stay. |
| M | Commercial / trade activities | As granted on the visa | Not the usual residence route | No employment authorisation | An extension or change requires a separate, qualifying application. |

“Not the usual route” does not mean a change of status is legally impossible. Qualifying in-country applications exist; confirm with the exit–entry authority. A visa or family status alone does not authorise employment.
Work authorisation under the applicable employment rules. It does not by itself grant entry or residence.

Different purposes. Different authorities. A work permit, an entry visa and a residence permit are not interchangeable.

It is not, by itself, permission to take an ordinary salaried job. Confirm qualifications and documents with the handling mission.

Entry status does not replace the work authorisation required for employment. Ask about the process for your specific case.
A separate status. A foreign permanent resident may work in China without a foreigner’s work permit.
Eligibility is specific and approval is not automatic. Check the official requirements rather than treating it as an alternative for a short visit.
Can lead to penalties and complicate later procedures. Check how the rules apply to your accommodation.
Can lead to penalties, detention and difficulties with future applications. Track the permission you actually hold.
A visit, business or family visa is not employment permission. Check before starting work or an internship.
Mismatched purpose or documents can delay or prevent approval. Do not rely on an assumed change after arrival.
Check the authority handling your application before paying, travelling or relying on a deadline.
